Civil Engineering & Survey Intern
Explore both sides of the project—from collecting information in the field to developing designs in the office. This internship offers hands-on experience working with our civil engineering and surveying departments.
What you’ll do:
- Assist survey crews with field measurements and data collection.
- Help organize survey information and prepare existing conditions drawings.
- Support engineers with drafting, preliminary design, and project documentation.
- Participate in site visits and learn how surveying, design, and permitting fit together.
What we’re looking for:
- Students pursuing civil engineering, surveying, or a related field.
- Curiosity, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn.
- An interest in both outdoor fieldwork and office-based technical work.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD or Civil 3D is helpful but not required.
Civil Designer
Help turn ideas into clear, coordinated plans. Our Civil Designer will work closely with engineers and surveyors to develop drawings for land development and infrastructure projects.
What you’ll do:
- Prepare site plans, grading plans, roadway and utility profiles, construction details, and permit drawings.
- Develop and maintain Civil 3D surfaces, alignments, and other design components.
- Incorporate survey information and coordinate revisions with the project team.
- Help produce accurate, organized construction documents.
What we’re looking for:
- Experience in civil drafting or design.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- An understanding of grading, drainage, utilities, and plan preparation.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to work through design details collaboratively.
Project Engineer
Take an active role in moving projects from concept through permitting and construction. Our Project Engineer will combine technical design with coordination among clients, reviewing agencies, and BH2M’s project teams.
What you’ll do:
- Develop designs for sites, subdivisions, roads, utilities, and stormwater systems.
- Prepare engineering calculations, drainage models, and permit applications.
- Coordinate project tasks and contribute to budgets and schedules.
- Assist with construction observation, estimates, and technical reviews.
What we’re looking for:
- A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and at least three years of relevant experience.
- Successful completion of the FE exam; PE licensure preferred.
- Proficiency in Civil 3D and HydroCAD.
- Strong technical writing, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Senior Project Engineer
Lead challenging projects while helping develop the people behind them. This role offers an experienced civil engineer the opportunity to guide design decisions, manage client relationships, and contribute to BH2M’s continued growth.
What you’ll do:
- Lead projects from initial scoping through design, permitting, and construction support.
- Manage project budgets, schedules, and coordination.
- Provide technical direction and review engineering deliverables.
- Mentor engineers and designers.
- Develop proposals and support new and ongoing client relationships.
What we’re looking for:
- Professional Engineer licensure in Maine, or eligibility to obtain it.
- Substantial civil engineering consulting and project management experience.
- Strong knowledge of Maine’s development review and permitting processes.
- Sound technical judgment and an ability to communicate practical solutions.
- An interest in leadership, mentoring, and continued hands-on engineering work.
Land Survey Department Manager
Lead a surveying department whose work supports property owners, developers, contractors, and our in-house project teams. This position combines professional surveying with staff leadership and department management.
What you’ll do:
- Plan workloads and coordinate field crews and office staff.
- Direct research, boundary analysis, survey computations, and preparation of survey plans.
- Review deliverables for accuracy, completeness, and professional standards.
- Manage client communication, proposals, budgets, and schedules.
- Mentor staff and guide department procedures and technical development.
What we’re looking for:
- An active Maine Professional Land Surveyor license.
- At least eight years of progressively responsible surveying and management experience.
- Experience with boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, and construction layout surveys.
- Proficiency with GPS and robotic survey equipment and AutoCAD; Civil 3D experience preferred.
- Strong leadership, organization, and communication skills.
- Availability to work from our Gorham office and travel to project sites as needed.
